Starting as a metal works in the 1920s, this Italian company has grown to become a pioneer of cutting-edge yet highly accessible contemporary design, responsible for numerous iconic pieces. Marcel Wanders is one the Netherlands' most prolific and ubiquitous modern designers. As well as running his own extremely successful on-line luxury label, he has worked for a host of high-end furniture and lighting brands. He has also brought his hip, modern aesthetic to a range of nightclubs, restaurants and hotels.

An example of the designer's fondness for translating vintage silhouettes into a contemporary context, the Dressed Egg cup with spoon from Alessi combines modern, ironic humour with old-world elegance. Measuring 8.2cm in height and 5cm in diameter, the egg cup features a scalloped rim and a traditional baluster shaped base, all made from brightly hued thermoplastic resin. Meanwhile, the stainless steel spoon terminates in a finial which is shaped like a gavel or small hammer, perfect for cracking the hardiest egg shell.
