The Finnish label Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The idea behind the group’s design is to always understand modern living as a form of the mind. Together the dynamic young designers developed the concept that the environment of everyday life should develop sustainably.
Artek - the synthesis of the arts
Today Artek is considered one of the most innovative companies of modern design. Today it continues the spirit of its founders, having established the stylish Artek stool and Artek lights. Behind the Artek furniture lies a thoroughly systematic idea which invites the combination of popular individual pieces, such as the Mademoiselle Rocking Chair and the E60 stool. The L-System, developed by Alvar Aalto, highlights Artek’s flexibility. The popular Artek furniture and accessories can be used in a variety of areas, whether in public or at home.
Artek - always one step ahead
One of the main ideas at Artek is never to be fully satisfied with the results. The creative minds behind the studio are always looking for new materials and innovative construction methods for their Artek Stool, Artek lamps, trays and place mats. That these were based on the ever popular bold designs of Alvar Aalto and belonged to one of the most popular installation series was obvious when Artek Studio celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2010. With the acquisition of the rights to Ilmari Tapiovaara’s designs, the design studio expanded its range once again. Furthermore, Artek works with experienced architects, designers and artists such as Eero Aaarnio, Naoto Fkasawa, Harri Koskinen and Juha Leiviska
