The Ultima Thule Water Glas Set Of 2 was designed by Tapio Wirkkala for the Finnish label iittala. First released in 1968, it remains a timeless piece of Finnish glassware, and with its delicately frosted finish, it will be a sublime vessel to serve drinks in the home.
Wirkkala was one of Finland's leading designers of the twentieth century. Born in 1915, his career lasted into the 1980s and he had the ability to work across disciplines as diverse as jewellery design, stoneware and furniture design. However, it was his glassware that set Wirkkala apart from the crowd, and most of his greatest pieces were created in collaboration with iittala in the 1960s.
This Ultima Thule Water Glas Set Of 2 is part of the Ultima Thule collection. The name refers to Thule, the legendary northern land of the ancient world, and the style of the piece summons up images of ancient chieftains feasting from goblets made from ice.
Wirkkala created the stunning texture by fashioning an intricate mould for the glass to form around; the results are extraordinary. Each glass measures 9cm in diameter and has a capacity of 0.2 litres, just right for an evening glass of wine.
