Ingo Maurer designed the Eclipse Ellipse LED - Wall Lamp for his eponymous label Ingo Maurer.
Born in Germany, Maurer grew up on an island, and in his young life, he would have witnessed the ever-changing effects of light upon water, the extraordinary shapes that resulted from the movement of the heavens. Maurer brought this sensibility to his study of art and his later work as a graphic designer. By the 1960s, he was channelling his design skills into lighting products, and by the 1990s, he was experimenting with LED technology.
All of these influences, his talent and technical skill converge in the Eclipse Ellipse LED - Wall Lamp. Made of steel and aluminium, the luminaire requires 1 x LED-unit 12W bulb of efficiency grade A++ to F . The luminaire has a diameter of 60cm and an adjustable "rotating" smaller disc is attached to it. As in the outdoor environment, illusion plays a part in how the light appears. The circular luminaire casts elliptical shadows while also throwing the adjustable component into shadow, like the moon appearing against the sun. In addition to its beauty as a household object, this lamp serves as a metaphor of the ever-moving cosmos.
