The Substance Chair was designed by Naoto Fukasawa for the manufacturer Magis.
Based near Venice, this Italian company works with a roll call of top international talent to deliver cutting-edge luxury décor for the home and office. Since establishing his own studio in 2003, Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa has brought his visual flair to gadgets such as CD players and mobile phones as well as many iconic pieces of furniture. He has worked as a lecturer and curator, and been the recipient of over 50 prestigious prizes, including the Idea Gold Award and the Mainichi Design Award.
Deceptively simple, the Substance Chair from Magis elevates the humble plastic chair with a combination of style and comfort. The seat is moulded from a single piece of polypropylene for supple, giving support, and its rounded contours fit snugly around the sitter's body. Made of bent ash plywood with a natural finish, the four-legged base is equally elegant in its minimalism. Measuring 80 cm in height, and 41.5 cm in width, with a seat height of 44cm, the Substance Chair is portable and hard-wearing, bringing crisp contemporary style to even the smallest of offices or work spaces.
