The Bauhaus Ashtray has been created by Marianne Brandt for the brand Tecnolumen. It was designed in 1924 when the Bauhaus Movement was going strong. It is one of the most apt representations of this movement that revolutionised design.
The Bauhaus Ashtray is made of stainless steel. It is polished, which gives it a sophisticated gleam. It has a cylindrical shape with an ashtray on top. The lid has an off-centre opening. It can be tilted to drop ashes into the container when the ashtray gets full. It can also be tilted to empty the base when it is full. This design seals off the smell of cigarettes and cigars which can be unpleasant for non-smokers. This design keeps smells and ashes out of the way as opposed to the conventional open ashtrays. It soon became the new standard with other brands and designers. The base has a cylindrical shape that is similar to the bottom of the ashtray so the two fit in.
The Bauhaus Ashtray has a height of 7cm and a diameter of 8cm. It comes in polished steel. Apart from its function, this clever contraption also looks stately and sophisticated sitting on a desk or table.
