The S 33 Pure Materials Cantilever Chair buffalo leat was designed by Mart Stam for the brand Thonet.
Stam was born in the Netherlands and steadily developed a reputation as an inspired architect and designer of the Bauhaus movement. Most famously, he is credited as the inventor of the cantilever frame, using steel to form his revolutionary chair. A defining moment in furniture manufacturing, it was adopted by other leading lights of the modernist movement. Thonet proved the ideal partner, having previously invented the bentwood process for for its furniture. The arrival of tubular steel provided another material to be shaped and formed.
This latest version of Stam's S 33 Pure Materials Cantilever Chair buffalo leat maintains the neat simplicity, replicating his original clean, clear form. The cantilever frame, in chrome-plated tubular steel, flexes to provide exceptional comfort and was described as "like sitting on air" when first made. The chair stands 84cm tall while the seat height is 46cm and is 50cm wide. Soft brown buffalo leather, stretched across the seat and back, provide the support and complete the understated beauty of this design classic and truly pioneering piece of furniture.
