The Akari 16 A Suspension Lamp was designed by Isamu Noguchi for the manufacturer Vitra. This Swiss manufacturer has been producing high quality furnishings and lighting for around 80 years and its Weil am Rhein manufacturing facility is home to the Vitra Campus and Design Museum. Isamu Noguchi was a highly regarded 20th century designer who used brush and sculptural design influences from China and Japan in his furniture, lighting and garden landscaping works. The Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York is home to many of his unique designs and further works can be viewed at the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum in Japan.
This Akari 16 A Suspension Lamp is one of a collection of 100 lamps and ceiling lights designed by Noguchi in 1951. It features sculptural Japanese washi paper created by Japanese artisans, providing a warm glow that is ideal for illuminating any interior. The word "akari" means light in Japanese and Noguchi started creating his line of lights after a visit to the Ozeki workshop in Gifu. Each light in this collection is crafted by hand using bamboo rods and wood to create its unique shape.
