Born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1958, Jean-Marc da Costa grew up in Switzerland, in Portugal and in Germany. He studied industry design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main, where he met Manfred Wolf. In 1983 together with Manfred Wolf he founded the company serien.lighting based in Rodgau near Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
In the same year da Costa designed his first lamp - the suspended lamp "Lift". "Lift" can be found at design centre Stuttgart or in the permanent collection of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.
Jean-Marc da Costa realized further famous designs as the lightings "Basis" and "Reflex" (both 1984), "Birdie" (1990), "Cosy" (1992), "Club" (1996), "SML" (1998) and the floor lamp "Slice" (2004).
Jean-Marc da Costa received for his creations numerous national and international design prizes, such as the Red Dot design prize, the iF Design Award and the national prize for product design in silver for the SML-lighting serial.
