Tomoko Azumi was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1966.
In 1989 she graduated in Product Design from Kyoto City University of Art, Japan.
From 1989 to 1990 Tomoko Azumi worked for an architectural practice in Japan. From 1990 to 1992 she joined Toda Construction Corporation, Design Room, Japan. In 1995 Tomoko Azumi received a Master degree in Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art, UK.
In 1995 Tomoko Azumi opened Azumi Design Studio in London together with Shin Azumi, her former husband.
The famous clients list included brands such as Magis, lapalma, Desalto, Muji, Authentics, Guzzini and many others from both Europe and Japan.
Their work has received numerous design awards, amongst others the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize in 2004, the Blueprint 100% Design Award in 2003 and Product of the Year, 2000 FX International Design Award for the LEM stool series.
Their designs have also been acquired for the permanent collections of many museums - such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), the Stedelijk Museum (Holland), the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt (Germany).
Tomoko Azumi founded t.n.a. Design Studio in 2005, after dissolving the former partnership. The studio has realized design work in the fields of furniture, household and electrical products, and lighting. It also carries out exhibition and commercial space design, as well as research projects. t.n.a. Design Studio has been an incubator of Tomoko Azumi's new challenges, developing products for clients, as well as supporting her researches. Tomoko Azumi was a research fellow at London Metropolitan University from 2006 to 2007.
