The SString Works Multi-Functional Panel was created by Nisse Strinning for his own String label, and debuted way back in 1949. Strinning set himself a challenging design conundrum: to create a multi-functional, aesthetically-pleasing panel for use in professional and domestic situations. The end product has found hundreds of uses in homes and offices across the world.
Strinning enjoyed a stellar career. Active from the 1940s until the 1990s, he won numerous awards, including gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Svensk Form Classic Award and the honour of exhibiting his classically Scandinavian designs worldwide.
One of his famous trademarks was the creative use of felt and other soft fabrics in ways that other designers had never considered. You can see this in the String Works Panel. Superficially, this is a simple panel with dimensions of 60 x 35.5 x 4 cm that is made from felt covered metal. However, it's a deceptive product. You'll notice this when you position a String Works Panel between areas of a noisy office, or within your living room. The felt covering is an astonishingly efficient sound dampener, cordoning off areas for quieter contemplation or listening to music.
