The MR 516 Side Table was designed by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe for the brand Thonet.
Mies Van de Rohe is one of the most famous names in modern architecture. Along with le Corbusier and Lloyd Wright, he introduced modernist ideas into building design, and also headed the Bauhaus in its later years. But Van der Rohe also worked on a smaller canvas, crafting some of the most impressive furniture of the 20th century. Many of these designs were marketed by German-Austrian label Thonet, and the MR 516 Side Table is an excellent example.
Reissued by the label on the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, this side table still surprises with its freshness and quality. Stunningly designed in a mid-20th century minimalist style, the MR 516 Side Table is a Van der Rohe masterpiece. Based around tubular steel, it has a four-legged composition and a rounded glass tabletop. The steel and glass combination works together, allowing users to see the cross-shaped frame underneath the glass, while providing room for meals, reading material, or computers. The table measures 38 x 70 cm, making it relatively compact. It also weighs 12.5kg - light enough to move with ease.
