The Girard Ornament is a creation of designer Alexander Girard for the Vitra label.
Born in New York in 1907 but raised in Florence, Italy, Alexander Girard is probably best known for his innovations in American textile design. However, during his extensive travels, Girard developed a keen interest in folk art throughout the world, and this inspired the American designer in creating his Girard Ornament collection. Although Girard died in 1993, his ornaments are timeless pieces and have more than withstood the test of time, being more popular today than when they first appeared. Simplistic, eye-catching and playful are some of the words used to describe a Girard Ornament by fans and experts alike.
The smiling sun ornament is probably the best known, but the Girard Ornament collection also comprises a moon, heart, dove and mouse motifs, and all five are created from high-quality metal and finished in polished brass to give a gold effect. Sizes vary for each ornament, and measurements range from 8 to 10cm wide and 4 to 9cm high. The ornaments make ideal festive decorations but can be displayed throughout the home or office all year round - they all make great conversation pieces.
