Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen designed the Organic Highback Chair for the Vitra company.
Founded in 1950, Vitra is a Swiss-based company that commissions the world's finest architects and designers to produce quality household and furnishing items. Charles Eames was one half of the famous Eames design duo, while Finnish-US architect Eero Saarinen achieved fame for his organic yet futuristic seating designs. Eames and Saarinen teamed together to create unique furniture, and in 1940, their designs won two MoMA prizes.
107cm in height and with a seat height of 35.5cm, a depth of 78.5cm and a width of 85cm, the Organic Highback Chair bears the hallmarks of both designers, including futuristic references attuned to physical comfort. Made of moulded polyurethane and covered in Hopsak 05 seating fabric, the chair rests upon a sturdy, black ash base. The outwardly-slanting legs add strength and contribute to the handsome, anthropomorphic profile, while the head rest and arm rests lend comfort, wit and style. On its own, the chair is both challenging and elegant, while a group of these chairs will add presence to every indoor space.
