The Wire Chair DKR-5 was created by Charles and Ray Eames for the manufacturer Vitra.
During the late 1950s, this Swiss firm played a significant role in bringing the best of American design to Europe. In particular, it introduced customers to the work of Charles and Ray Eames, a husband-and-wife team who changed the look of homes and offices with their iconic textiles and furniture like the Wire Chair DKR-5. The pair received numerous life achievement awards, including a Royal Gold Medal, and the designers have even inspired a set of commemorative stamps.
Originally introduced in 1951, the Wire Chair DKR-5 is 85cm in height and 49cm in width, with a seat height of 43cm. The seat is made of steel wire mesh, which rests upon four rhomboid legs, and the piece is finished off with a cushion in a durable, non-slip textile. The skeletal design of the Wire Chair DKR-5 has a strong architectural impact, but it is also light and airy, making it a good option for parts of the home where you want to avoid heavy, dark furniture, such as kitchens and breakfast nooks.
